Closing Mass of the Centenary Celebrations of the Province of Wales
On Saturday 5th November 2016, Bishop Peter was joined by Archbishop George Stack (Archbishop of Cardiff), Bishop Thomas Burns (Menevia) and Bishop Emeritus Edwin Regan, to concelebrate a Mass of thanksgiving for the Centenary of the founding of the Province of Wales.
The celebration took place at St Mary's Cathedral, Wrexham with the congregation made up by representatives from the various parishes throughout the Diocese of Wrexham with the celebrations reflecting the enormous changes that have taken place in the history and sociology of the Catholic Church in Wales.
In February 1916 the Archdiocese of Cardiff and the then suffragan Diocese of Menevia with the pro-cathedral in Wrexham were created into a province following the restoration of the hierarchy in England and Wales in 1850. In 1987 further developments were made in the province with the creation of a new Diocese of Menevia in mid Wales and the Diocese of Wrexham in the North.
The Mass at the Cathedral was the final Celebratory Mass of the province which closed the centenary celebrations, concluding with the diocese looking towards the future with hope.
Following the Mass, those present attended a reception to continue the celebration of this milestone for the Catholic province Wales.
