Hundreds of parishioners and special guests turned out to celebrate 100 years of prayer at St Michaels & All Angels in Conwy, as they celebrated their Centenary on Sunday 25th September.
The Centenary Year Mass was celebrated by Bishop Peter, while Rev Fr Augustine Franklin msp the Parish Priest and Monsignor Fealy concelebrated. The Mayor of Conwy Pat Hart and her consort plus the Vice Chair Peter Lewis MBE of Conwy County Borough Council and his wife were in attendance to celebrate the importance of the Church in Conwy to the faithful.
One hundred years ago the possibility of a new Church for the faithful had arisen through the great benefactor Miss Emma Houlgrave of Seaforth, Liverpool. The Architect Mr Alfred Gilbertson of Liverpool “provided a most excellent edifice and the Contractor Messrs Fleming and Sons, Neston have put their best work into the building.”
In 1916 the opening mass was attended by the Mayor and other civic members. The Bishop preached on the text “This is the house of God-the gate of heaven”. He went on to say “That day formed an epoch in the history of the little mission at Conwy, which was dedicated to St Michael & All Angels and doubtless that day was a day of joy for all those Catholics who resided in the neighbourhood and for those who visited this beautiful spot on the North Wales coast.
Following the Mass on Sunday the celebrations continued with a celebratory lunch for all. The Church hall and grounds were full with people with their own joyful stories of their time at St Michaels & All Angels and their wish for the church in Conwy to continue to serve the needs of the faithful in Conwy for another 100 years.
