On Tuesday the 8th December, Bishop Peter opened the Diocesan Holy Door of Mercy at the Inaugural Mass of the Jubilee of Mercy held at St Mary's Cathedral Wrexham. The Mass was attended by clergy and parishioners from across the Diocese.
The event marked the start of the Holy Year in the Diocese of Wrexham, which will be followed by a calendar of events taking place throughout 2016 until the Holy Year end on the Feast of Christ the King on the 20th November.
The Holy door at St Mary's Cathedral is the principle Door of Mercy for the Diocese, however a further Door will be opened early in the New Year for pilgrims visiting the shrine of St Winefride at Holywell and a specially commissioned 'portable door' will be utilised as Bishop Peter visits the Diocesan Deaneries throughout 2016.
The Holy Door at the Cathedral was designed and built by Antony and Patrick Walters, parishioners of the diocese and is based on the Holy doors at St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
The extra ordinary Jubilee Year, given to us by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, enables the Catholic community an opportunity to demonstrate mercy and compassion in thought and deed, focussing on reconciliation and forgiveness. Crossing the threshold of the Holy Door is a symbolic act of spiritual renewal and the passage of sin to grace, enabling those who cross, to experience the love and compassion of God our Father.
During 2016, the diocese will run a series of events to celebrate the Jubilee Year, these include:
